Lack of personnel and technology: German airports are currently facing several problems. The federal government is now pushing for a long-term adjustment – and an “immigration facilitation law”.

Berlin. In view of the current bottlenecks at German airports, the Federal Association of the German Aviation Industry (BDL) is calling for long-term adjustments – in technology and in official supervision – when recruiting workers from abroad.
“We need an immigration facilitation law in Germany, for example in relation to staff shortages at local service providers,” said BDL general manager Matthias von Rando on Friday.
Personnel from abroad can be recruited for a limited period
The possibility of recruiting employees from third countries, which is currently limited to three months, has only helped many companies to a limited extent. The ground service providers have corrected the demand downwards, so that fewer than the originally hired 2000 temporary workers, mainly from Turkey, are expected to be needed.
Von Rando also called for faster processing of the so-called official credibility checks that all new employees have to go through.
In addition, in the long term, digitization will help to make airport processes less complicated for passengers. “In the future, we want to use biometrics and digitization to significantly simplify passenger processes at airport locations.”
