Brookfield — Community officials are preparing to demolish the East John Schuster’s Steak House building on Brookfield Avenue in Mussoorie.
Code Enforcement Officer Pete Ross told community trustees at his meeting Monday that the building would be demolished in mid-September.
Dan Sutles, chairman of the trustees, said the property is owned by the Trumbull County Land Bank. He said asbestos was found inside the building, which must be removed before demolition. The cost of the asbestos remediation work was $100,000 and would be funded by the Land Bank and County Commissioners along with US bailout plan funds.
Sutles said the property has been vacant for years.
In recent years, the community has received support from the Trumbull County Council of Government to cover the cost of demolition, including the Gray Wolf Tavern. Sadtles said the project is run through a land bank.
In another deal, to improve the security of the council building, trustees are soliciting bids to install parking lot lights for the front and sides of the building. Suttles said officials wanted to expand the current lighting system to brighten the area. He said some lights weren’t working.
Sutles said Police Chief Dan Faustino will seek subpoenas and seek funding for the project.
The trustees also approved the sale of two smaller community-owned lots, one on Davis Street and the other on Sime Street. Bids are being solicited, according to Suttles, which will open at 4 p.m. on September 23
Suttles said there are deed restrictions on the property, so some vehicle manufacture and storage are not allowed. Suttles said the trustees wanted to make sure the assets didn’t come under prying eyes.
Also at the meeting, the Trustees heard from a Brookfield Schools representative that high school students were interested in doing community volunteer projects in the community.
Suttles said that over the years the students have helped pick leaves and clear snow. He said community and school officials are reviewing various project ideas.
The trustees are also considering three projects that could use US bailout funds. Suttles said ARP’s proposed projects include playground equipment renovations and a $45,000 park upgrade; Railings and other work on Pavilion at Beach Green for $10,000; And the landscaping and center mulching is $7,000 green.
In another way, the trustees act:
• scheduled a special meeting at 6pm on September 14 at the park for public input on potential park improvements;
• Hired Prime Electric for $3,094 for electrical repairs at the Edison Road Firehouse substation;
• Permission to replace LED parking lot lights in police stations.
