Personally, I like to make sure I have some form of health insurance when traveling abroad. Some US-based health plans offer coverage, and some of my credit cards also offer emergency medical evacuation, but I prefer to cover my base. I use different cards for different purposes of travel and I still have my suspicions that the credit card company is finding some reason not to cover an emergency medical evacuation. I normally use Allianz for travel insurance and found out on a trip to Australia a few years ago that travel insurance can be purchased after departure. It’s not that expensive either…so if you’re on a trip right now or feel like you’ve forgotten like I did, you can have your trip covered after you leave.
What is covered?
OneTrip Medical Emergency is a great option if you’ve been on a trip, forgot to get insurance and are looking for a way to get coverage in a foreign country. Here is a list of benefits included before and after departure.
Medicine was my main concern
While losing a piece of luggage, being delayed or losing a hotel deposit can be difficult, my main concern was being struck by a life-threatening illness abroad or a large medical bill. I also have a few different credit cards that cover lost luggage, travel delays, etc, so that’s not my main concern. When my mother fell years ago in a hotel room in South Africa, she broke her wrist. Not only did her travel insurance reimburse her for all medical expenses, while in South Africa she also covered bills in the States, including physical therapy.
I paid for a trip for my wife and could walk a month later this year and take us around the world. This is mostly covered with points, but I’ve set other values to $2500. Travel insurance was $92 and covered both of us. It’s a no-brainer for us and something we will definitely do, especially in times of Covid. As you can see, pandemic coverage is included.
