Brian Deese, White House director of the National Economic Council, said during an interview with Bloomberg Markets: The Open Thursday that President Biden is doing “everything.” [he] possibly can” to tackle high gas prices.
“We must act and act on behalf of the American people. That’s what the President does,” Deese said. “He says his top priority is getting prices down and he’s focused on practical things he can do every day.”
Deese pointed to the Biden administration’s release of US strategic oil reserves as evidence that the president is doing everything in his power to fight high prices.
“So the release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve sounds esoteric to people, but oil market analysts you’ve had on that show will say that single-handedly it was responsible for oil prices not rising,” he said.

This comes as the Biden administration was criticized this week over reports that some of America’s oil reserves were being sent to China and other nations.
“The American people deserve answers as to why our emergency energy supplies are being sent to foreign adversaries like the Chinese Communist Party, thereby jeopardizing our energy security and national security,” said Cathy McMorris Rodgers, a member of the House Energy and Trade Committee.
Deese also said, “We’re starting to see a little bit of that moderation at the pump” in relation to gas prices. “The President says let’s do more. Let’s do everything we can,” he said.
Biden recently blamed individual gas stations for the high price of gasoline, which even liberals like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos criticized.

Deese also noted that in his defense, Biden called for a gas tax holiday. However, many have criticized the proposed gas tax exemption as ineffective in lowering prices, as such a tax relief would increase demand and thus prices.
Even former President Obama criticized a planned gas tax holiday as a “gimmick” in the 2008 election campaign.
“You need a president who will stay on the ball and show the American people that we are making progress. That we have made tremendous economic progress, but he is not satisfied with that and we are sticking with it,” said Deese.
