Effectiveness Of Coronavirus Vaccines Has Not Dropped Much So Far For Most Vaccinated Americans: US-CDC

The coronavirus has been spreading all across the US rapidly and the delta variant of the virus has led to a big strain on the emergency healthcare systems in the nations. The daily average of hospitalized Covid-19 patients in the US is now upwards of 1,00,000, the highest level in the past eight months.

On account of this rapid transmission of the deadly virus, the White House and the authorities are clamoring for the introduction of a booster Covid-19 vaccine dose to most of the population. It is reported that the White House is planning the introduction of booster dose for all adults in September, although approvals are not yet received from the US Food and Drug Administration (US-FDA) and the CDC.

While CDC Advisory Committees are discussing potential booster doses, according to Dr. Sara Oliver of CDC, the vaccines offered to Americans are still effective to offer protection against severe symptoms. Dr. Oliver on Monday reported that based on the data that goes through July, the vaccine still offers strong protection against Covid-19. According to Dr. Oliver, the VE or vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization remains high from 75% to 95%, even against the Delta variant of the virus.

According to Dr. Oliver, while the effectiveness of vaccines wanes over time and is quite low against the Delta variant, all the Covid-19 vaccines used in the US remain effective against hospitalization and any severe complications. She stressed that the vaccines may be less effective in preventing infection or mild illness, but the vaccines prevent severe complications and hospitalizations. Unpublished CDC data shows that vaccine effectiveness in the age group of 18 to 74 remains as high as 94% implying the vaccine offers strong protection against severe disease.

Already the CDC and the FDA have authorized the use of a booster dose for immunocompromised people in the US and all three vaccine companies in the US – Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J are evaluating booster doses for all. According to Oliver, it is still unclear what results would a booster dose achieve – Would the booster doses reduce Covid-19 incidence, reduce hospitalizations or reduce mortality? She also stressed evaluating the safety and the protection offered by the booster doses.

Meanwhile, the White House officials and researchers are analyzing data received from Israel where people in the age group from 12 to adults have started receiving the booster doses. Prima facie, the Israeli data reveals that the booster dose of vaccine offered better protection and a much lower risk of becoming infected, even as the more transmissible Delta variant swept across Israel. In Israel, booster doses are given to people who have received their last vaccine dose at least 5 months before. The US health officials are exploring recommending booster doses for people who have received vaccines at least 8 months before.

While the real-world study of the effect of boosters on the US population remains to be seen, it is clear that people who have received vaccines recently are less likely to get infected by the coronavirus and hence rapid vaccination drives are advocated throughout the country.
