The GMB union has submitted formal wage demands to Amazon, demanding a minimum of £15 an hour for workers in its UK warehouses, as informal protests against the online retailer continue.
Hundreds of workers in warehouses across the country including Tilbury in Essex, Dartford in Kent, Belvedere in south-east London, Coventry, Avonmouth near Bristol and Ruggle in Staffordshire stopped work last week as Amazon laid off workers. an increase of 35 pence an hour was offered. – Equivalent to around 3% compared to the inflation rate in June of 9.4%.
Shiftwork walkouts, canteen sit-ins and “go-slow” protests are understood to have continued on a smaller scale this week as workers continued to expect better deals from Amazon. More coordinated action by workers was expected across the country at midnight on Tuesday.
Workers in Tilbury, where informal industry began, are now being paid a minimum of £11.10 an hour and are asking for a £2 increase.
Amazon said national-level staff would be offered a 35p increase from £10.50 or £11.45 an hour, depending on their location, and defended its “competitive” pay package.
GMB, which is not officially recognized by Amazon but has members in its camps, solicits discussions facilitated through the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas).
So far, Amazon has only held meetings with small groups of employees to ensure “all workers’ voices are heard.”
“In order to retain employees, Amazon must reward now [them] With a decent salary bonus,” reads a letter from the union to Amazon seen by the Guardian.

GMB National Secretary Andy Prendergast said: “Amazon employees deserve a fair raise. They are the backbone of the company – one of the most profitable in the world.
“When the High Street was closed by Covid Amazon continued to make money. The least it can do is share those benefits with its employees.”
Amazon said the proposed wage increase would mean a 29 percent increase in the minimum hourly wage for warehouse workers since 2018. It added: “In addition, employees are offered a comprehensive benefits package that includes private health insurance, life insurance, income protection. , subsidized meals, an employee discount and more, which together cost thousands of pounds a year, and a company pension plan.”
