The latest round of HBO Max cuts is focused on animated projects, and according to TV Line, the most notorious casualty is none other than Batman: Caped Crusader. The animated series was announced on May 19, 2021 and had some pretty big names behind it – JJ Abrams, The Batman director Matt Reeves and Bruce Timm from Batman: The Animated Series. As Reeves’ involvement suggests, Batman: Caped Crusader focuses on the young, brooding version of Batman introduced in The Batman and played by Robert Pattinson in the live-action film.
With news that HBO Max is no longer interested, Batman: Caped Crusader now exists alongside several other animated projects in limbo. However, there’s always a chance the show will rise again as it remains in production while HBO Max tries to find another home for the series. Whether that can be achieved remains to be seen, but as it stands, fans could take solace in the news that Abrams’ other major DC animated project for HBO Max – Justice League Dark – is reportedly progressing as planned.
