The Minister of Labor fears that Germany could slip into a “state of recession” in the winter. Now he wants to make sure the recession doesn’t wreak havoc on the job market.
Schoenebeck. In view of the precarious economic growth, Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) wants to expand easier access to short-time work. During a summer visit to Schönbeck in Saxony-Anhalt on Thursday, Heil announced that he wanted to launch a similar draft in the coming days.
The number of employees affected by short-time work has recently fallen from around 6 million at the height of the corona pandemic to almost 500,000. But in the face of risks like inflation, high energy prices and a stagnant supply chain, Heal says he wants to offer companies and employees some protection.
Easier access to short-time work to secure jobs during the Corona crisis. If, for example, at least ten percent of the employees in the company are affected by a loss of work, the short-time allowance can already be paid. The limit used to be a third. Additionally, employees don’t have to build up negative hours before they start reaping the benefits of the reduced hours. Unless extended, these rules will expire at the end of September.
Heal said some parts of manufacturing and trade could face trouble. “We still have development,” said Heil. However, there could be a “recession” in winter, the minister said, citing economists.
Heal Plan Home Office Return Offer Requirement
It had only become known a day earlier that the Federal Ministry of Labor was planning to return to the Interior Ministry’s normal offer from October. According to a draft law on the SARS-CoV-2 Occupational Health and Safety Ordinance available to the German Press Agency, employers should again be obliged to offer employees home offices to protect against corona infection.
In Schönbeck, Heil visits a company that manufactures emergency vehicles for emergency doctors and rescue services. The Minister of Labor also took a seat in a blue-light ambulance. Before that, Heil met with start-up entrepreneurs in the stadium of 1. FC Magdeburg. The politician had also practiced punishment.
