If you have an under-sink tank or an electronic instantaneous water heater, you can adjust the water temperature as needed. Consumers can control the core temperature of hot water, according to nonprofit consultancy co2online Save around 37 euros a year.
The amount is based on calculations by the Federal Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) based on annual average values for 2021. That was 32.16 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh). With prices currently on the rise, the savings are likely to be even greater.
Lower basic temperature: do I have to take a cold shower now?
At first glance, it seems like a lack of comfort when washing, showering and showering. But that is not true. If you lower the core temperature, do not wash cold immediately. Pleasantly hot shower and bath water is usually only around 40 degrees.
That’s why Co2online recommends a 60-degree setting in the bathroom and kitchen. That’s enough for hot water, but can save a good ten percent on electricity costs with such devices. But it shouldn’t be below 60 degrees.
At this temperature, the harmful bacteria legionella die off.
Attach timer to circulation pump
A timer can also help. However, this only applies if you use a circulation pump for hot water in your house. This allows hot water to circulate between the boiler and the faucet, so that hot water comes out of the shower and tap immediately.
It may be convenient, but ultimately such a circulation pump consumes electricity and heat energy around the clock. If you have installed a timer, the circulation pump can be adjusted to your personal daily routine. So this only works if you’re using really hot water.
According to the experts from Co2online, switching off the circulation pump can also help. The downside is that it takes some time for hot water to flow out of the faucet. The electricity savings for a four-person household are around 85 euros.
Attach the aerator to the faucet
An aerator is an economy aerator. This practical savings tool is available for little money in every hardware store. An aerator connects directly to the faucet and mixes the air into the stream of water, allowing consumers to waste less water.
Such tasks are also available online. For example less than four euros at Amazon (or here).
On average, the aerator costs about nine euros each, but can save up to a liter of water per minute. It also significantly reduces heating and electricity costs for hot water.
Possible savings: Up to 100 euros per year.
Aerator for shower head is also available. In addition to an affordable shower head, the cost can be significantly reduced.
