WOODSIDE, Queens (WABC) – It’s been an insurance nightmare in Queens after a rental car – normally used for walking – crashed into more than three dozen cars.
The damaged SUVs required hundreds of thousands to be repaired and rented out to owners, but when her resolve hit a wall, it was up to Nina Pineda and 7 On Your Side to get them back on the road.
Local residents said it looked like a freight train was coming through their street. An uncontrolled 5-ton, 26-foot rental truck demolished two blocks in Woodside, pushing 40 cars aside.
An example was that of Khan.
“The damage is only from the rear bumper, it damaged the lights and two doors,” Khan said.
His Honda was the first car hit. The tumbling rental truck became detached from the front end and she said she could no longer drive the car because of the damage.
His neighbor Tom Wojtaszczyk said his car was also completely damaged. His SUV was wrecked and the janitor’s truck collided with his other car, a Toyota.
They invested Wojtaszczyk in his shop to fix and sell them. Now he’s in the $30,000 hole.
“That’s a lot of money out of my own pocket,” said Wojtaszczyk.
In mid-June, Eyewitness News reported on the rental wreck and both Wojtszczyk and Khan were interviewed.
The driver was arrested after allegedly falling asleep, eyewitness news reporter Mike Marza predicted on June 16.
“What an insurance headache that’s going to be,” he said at the time.
He was right. Nearly three weeks after the early demolition derby, appraisers have yet to go out and no rent has yet been issued.
No Honda meant tough for Khan, a single mother of two.
She said, “I’ll take a cab, take a cab, friends left me, do what I want.” “It’s going to be expensive.”
“They gave us the yes treatment – ‘yes, we’ll take care of it, yes, we’ll do it’ and didn’t do anything,” Wojtaszyk said.
So 7 On Your Side contacted the insurance company and within hours the adjusters were out assessing the damage to the cars.
The insurance company apologized and said it would quickly pursue claims of all car owners.
Within a day, Khan received much-needed rent and a settlement of over $15,000 for his Honda.
“I want to say a big thank you to you guys,” she said.
And Wojtaszczyk got about $30,000 for his two cars.
“I wouldn’t have gone anywhere without you,” said Wojtaszczyk.
