Getty Ex-Raiders head coach Jon Gruden.
After Jon Gruden was fired from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009, he was a sought-after coach for years. Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis pursued him for years, eventually convincing him to return in 2018. Things didn’t go as planned as the coach failed to lead the team to the playoffs in any of his first three years.
The fourth year started promisingly until a series of emails were leaked to the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times that contained racist, homophobic and sexist language used by Gruden. The coach resigned and is now suing the NFL over emails leaked to the media.
Many of Gruden’s emails were from before he took over the Raiders, but that wasn’t enough of an excuse to secure his job. The coach’s agent, Bob LaMonte, recently came out to defend Gruden.
“And that was ten years ago. Then why Jon and why the Raiders? He wasn’t even in the league at the time of those emails…that’s the tragedy of it,” LaMonte said, according to JoeBucsFan’s Ira Kaufman. “You can say whatever you want, but if someone really understands Jon, they know he’s not racist. That’s pretty obvious. Nobody would ever say that.”
Some of Gruden’s former players have come out and defended him, but it will be difficult for him to return to the NFL.

LaMonte predicts Gruden will return to training
With Gruden’s tenure with the Raiders already under fire for the poor product he brought to the court, it’s hard to imagine any NFL team wanting to hire him back, especially as a head coach. He could be valuable as an offensive coordinator but his skills as a head coach are questionable. With the controversy now surrounding his name, he’s even less likely to land an NFL coaching job.
LaMonte has represented Gruden for years and knows the coach well. He defended the coach and predicted that one day he would be back on the sidelines.
“I believe in my heart and soul that he will be back as a coach,” LaMonte said. “I would be very surprised if he didn’t. My question is what did Jon actually do? Most people wouldn’t want to see their private emails from 10 days ago.”
LaMonte also called the NFL about the email leak.
“I can tell you right away that it was great work,” added LaMonte.

Could Gruden coach in college?
The fact that Gruden is suing the NFL only hurts his chances of getting back to coaching in the league. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick has also sued the NFL, and the fact that he can’t win a team is an ongoing national story. Gruden won’t get the same passion from fans as Kaepernick.
If Gruden hopes to be a coach again, it probably has to be in the college ranks. Controversial coaches have landed college coaching jobs in the past. Gruden is still a big name, so a small school looking to raise its profile might like the idea of creating a media frenzy by hiring a coach.
