COVID-19 is the latest topic in headlines since 2020. The worldwide pandemic is taking peculiar twists and turns after one year. A recent study portrays the impact on the general population due to coronavirus spread. Most cases are of the Long COVID scenario. It implies that the patients are not recovering even after six months.
More Than A Quarter Of COVID-19 Patients Still Symptomatic After 6 Months
All the details of the victims are there in the quarterly report. An open-access journal was published recently by the University of Zurich, Switzerland. The main persons behind this initiative are Milo Puhan and his other colleagues at the university. Initially, professionals focused on eliminating the coronavirus from the body of the affected. However, this was not all. Gradually, they became familiar with the dangerous aftereffects and consequences of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Reflection In The New Study
The new study revealed that the infection can have severe post-COVID effects. Moreover, the treatment can have both mental and physical consequences. For the global healthcare system, this topic is of great concern at present. The long-term consequences of the virus are known as “Post-COVID-19 Syndrome” or “Long COVID”.
The doctors decided to conduct an experiment with 431 participants. After the diagnosis, they filled up a form describing their health conditions. Furthermore, all of them tested positive within the period February to August 2020. Around 89% of the patients showed symptoms. On the other hand, approximately 19% suffered hospitalization in the initial phases.
It is clear from the recent developments that more than 26% of the COVID-19 patients failed to recover. They are suffering even after the expiry of six to eight months. In medical terms, this is very unusual and needs immediate treatment. The percentage of different symptoms varied in the individuals. Almost 25% faced breathing issues, while signs of fatigue were prominent in 55%. Even multiple people suffered from depression.
As per the reports, more women already hospitalized showed lesser signs of recovery than the males. This figure is also less in comparison to the number of non-hospitalized persons. Therefore, researchers found out that there was a lack of proper resources. This led to compromise on the part of the patient care. Another matter responsible for such consequences is the lack of timely planning. The healthcare units must be cautious about the availability of the resources.
Underlying Findings Of The Study
Authors are writing several theses projecting the current scenario of the medical system. In short, COVID-19 patients are unlikely to respond to the treatments even after six months. Furthermore, out of the infected persons, more than 26% are still suffering after a thorough diagnosis. Besides, almost 40% went for a second opinion or to get admission to another healthcare unit. Therefore, the individual needs of all the COVID-19 affected patients are not the same. So, the doctors must immediately look into the matter.
In case of a lack of proper resources, they must report to the concerned authorities. The symptoms are also showing unexpected changes. In PLOS, all these points are portrayed. Filling out the online questionnaire helped the medical team a lot. They managed to compare the conditions of different infected individuals at a time.
The long-term complications among so many patients need investigation. With the increasing severity of lung and kidney diseases, immediate measures must be applied. Not only the hospitalized people but also the home-isolated patients showed the symptoms. Mild symptoms at the initial stage were common in almost all the cases.
However, even after the expiry of the danger period, new symptoms are arising in their bodies. Some are experiencing memory loss and anxieties. Although the children did not face any trouble in this situation, the older people are at their worst. The doctors are now concentrating more to discover the exact reasons for such symptoms. Furthermore, the announcement of the second and third waves is creating chaos among the global population. More robust medical activities need to be a part of this movement soon.
