Omega-3 Levels In The Blood May Affect Lifespan Positively

Omega-3 fatty acids are not an unknown term for anyone. They are nothing but, polyunsaturated fatty acids. Moreover, they are available in a wide range of foods. A new study has come up, which aims to study the relationship between omega-3 and human life expectancy. The researchers have concluded that having higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids in the body can lower the mortality rate of senior citizens above the age of 65 years.

Omega-3 Levels In The Blood May Affect Lifespan Positively

Today, most people would not be surprised, if they found a store or pharmacy storing such Omega-3 supplements in the front row. This particular fatty acid is supposed to have numerous health benefits. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, also says that there may be longevity connected with this.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

National Institute of Health researchers say that omega-3 is one of the two main types of polyunsaturated fatty acids. These are considered essential to the well-being of an individual. The reason being that the body cannot make them on their own. Moreover, the Omega-3 fatty acids also provide three primary fatty acids to the body. They are alpha-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid.

Moreover, omega-3s provide also affect vital functioning inside the body. It affects the cardiovascular system, pulmonary system, and immune system. Many women are prescribed DHAs during pregnancy to aid in fetal development. Apart from supplements, there are some common sources of omega-3 fatty acids. They are flaxseed oil, soybeans, canola, salmon, tuna, sardines, and chia seeds.

The NIH has found out that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids has anti-carcinogenic properties as well. It can also reduce the risks associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Rheumatoid arthritis is another disease, that it can keep at bay.

What did The New Study say?

The recent studies were conducted at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute in Barcelona, Spain, and the Fatty Acid Research Institute in Sioux Falls, SD. Researchers aimed at finding out the role of omega-3 fatty acids on life expectancy. The researchers were able to track 2,240 participants over eleven long years. Moreover, the researchers divided the participants into four groups.

  • Those with high Omega-3 levels, who never smoked
  • Those with high Omega-3 levels, who smoked
  • Those with low Omega-3 levels, who never smoked
  • Those with low Omega-3 levels, who did smoke

The Kaplan Meier survival curves were used. The analysis was based on age and different risk profiles. The first category of people had the highest survival rate. Finally, it is quite evident that people who had low levels of Omega-3 and did smoke had a low survival level. Dr. Aleix Sala-Vila says that the ingestion of oily fish can increase life expectancy in the long run. Therefore, all doctors should encourage the patients to increase the consumption of such oils. Today, knowing a patients’ Omega-3 index is much easier, than knowing and controlling the blood pressure index. A person should talk to their doctor regarding this.

Limitations Of The Study

The study like all others does have certain limitations. No doctor can say for sure, that high levels of fatty acids do affect longevity. However, it does help to a certain extent. The researchers have plans to expand their studies to people beyond the U.S. The study can help with the recommendation of different diets as biomarkers. The blood concentration types of Omega-3s are also worth a study.

The study has pointed towards the fact, that such high levels of Omega-3 can, in fact, increase the levels of healthy fats in the blood. Fish is one of the most common sources for the same, if records are to be believed. Moreover, it also affects brain health.
