Over 40 Million Confirmed Covid-19 Cases In The United State

Data from Johns and Hopkins University show that the US has crossed 40 million confirmed Covid cases. The United States is under the fourth way caused by the Delta variant. The Hospitals are full of patients, the staff is exhausted.

Claire White, an ICU nurse, calls it tragic and said, “ this could have been avoided.” Over 102,000 citizens were hospitalized due to Covid-19 on Sunday. The average number of hospitalizations has risen to 100,000. This is so high for the first time since February.

Due to the surge in Covid-19 cases, the hospitals are working beyond capacity. The hospital staff has been working restlessly for the past 18 months. Last week in Idaho, the condition worsened; only four out of 400 ICU beds were available for adults.

Brad Little, Governor of Idaho, confirmed that we are in a clear condition to activate the statewide crisis for the standard of care. 

The situation is so bad that the staff has to decide who can be treated and who cannot be. On the same note, Arkansas had only 8 ICU beds available in August. In Oregon, only 50 out of the 638 hospital beds were available.

Data from the Department of Health and Human Services, show 75% of the hospital beds in the country are occupied. The hospitalization rate is up by 158% from last year.

The number of Covid-19 cases saw a boom around the labor day with 300% more Covid-19 cases. The number of cases reported after this labor day this year is higher than last year. The country is reporting more than 1,500 deaths per day due to Covid-19 since March.

The situation is worrying because various students are returning to the in-person classroom. The experts are warning that the holiday weekends may worsen the Covid-19 condition in the United States. 

Despite the high availability of vaccine doses in the market, only 53% of the American population is fully vaccinated. Only 62% of Americans are eligible for vaccination as of now.

The United States Government is considering booster shots for American citizens. But the decision does not look going well. The FDA is yet to conduct a meeting about the same on 17 September. The data available from Pfizer-BioNTech will be renewed by the authority for the booster dose. 

Various groups are stepping ahead against the booster shots for the American citizens. They are of the view that scientific evidence does not support an extra dose of vaccine for now. 

The Acting Commissioner of FDA and CDC Director informed that Pfizer booster dose approval will be discussed currently, due to some time issues. Pfizer booster might get approval by September 20, said Dr. Fauci. 

The pandemic has led to a crisis in nurse staffing. It is forcing hospitals to get nurses appointed at higher wages. Risa Moriarity, an executive at the University of Mississippi Medical Emergency Department said; “ It is exhausting and tragic to restlessly care for the people who are careless about their health.”
