One of America’s top infectious disease experts, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and the White House health advisor, urged Americans who are reported to be skipping their second dose of vaccine to take that shot as it would benefit them and the nation a lot. There have been reports that around 8% of Americans who received their first dose of Pfizer or Moderna Covid vaccines have been hesitant in taking their second shot as many of those who took their first shots have witnessed harsh side effects that left them hesitant to take their second dose.
“Take That Second Dose”, Urges Fauci To Fellow Americans
Fauci urged them to take their second dose as skipping the second dose could be a problem for the Americans. As per experts, “ a single shot triggers a weaker immune response than two shots”. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require 2 doses given three to four weeks apart. These vaccines are about 95% effective against the virus, the strong protection kicks in after 2 weeks of taking the second dose, but for that people need to be sensible enough to take the second dose itself. There have been myths regarding the Covid-19 vaccines, and the surveys show that they have affected the youth’s eagerness to take the vaccine. As per a report from Facebook, the demand to get vaccinated reduced from 75 % in February to 67% currently, and the ban on the J&J vaccine regarding side effects didn’t help either. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) uplifted ban and has been encouraging the youth to get more and more vaccinated, as according to medical experts, around 75-85% of the population needs to be vaccinated so as to suppress and thus eradicate the virus.
Fauci cited the reports of the CDC which states that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are 64% effective at preventing hospitalization of people who have been affected by Covid after the first shot, but this percentage shoots up to 94% after one takes the second dose. Fauci said, “If you’re having a two-dose regimen, make sure you’re getting that second dose” during a White House briefing on tackling the coronavirus pandemic. Fauci also urged the healthcare providers to reschedule canceled visits for second shots as people need to get fully vaccinated in order to create a safe environment where the spread of the virus is suppressed. It has been observed that the rate of daily vaccinations is slowing down in the U.S after months of the climb. The reasons could be the growing confidence of people upon seeing the daily average death toll reduce or due to the hesitancy of the youth upon hearing the myths and rumors regarding the vaccine. The country is averaging 2.6 million reported vaccinations per day, which as per data from the CDC is a steep downfall from 3.4 million vaccinations per day on 13th April. Fauci urged the youth to be vaccinated as soon as possible and help the authorities who have been trying to push the vaccines in the market so as to vaccinate more and more people, as the new Covid strain, the B.1.1.7 has hit the U.S youth pretty hard and is highly contagious, so those who think that they are young, and are immune to the virus need to reconsider as these are very sensitive times. Tough death toll and positivity rate are on the decline, one should always be ready to expect the unexpected in the case of the coronavirus as it can be seen in the case of countries like Brazil and India, where the authorities are struggling to manage the second wave of Covid. Fauci also asked people who got infected with the coronavirus between the vaccine shots, to get their second dose after they have recovered and are no longer contagious.
