Due to Spy X Family’s increasing popularity due to its intriguing storyline and lovable characters, it has been announced that there are plans for a musical adaptation of Spy X Family’s anime/manga series. However, this is not the first anime to be musically treated. Spirited Away already had a very popular musical and there is an upcoming musical for My Neighbor Totoro.

Toho Stage, the production company behind the stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away, plans to release the Spy X Family musical adaptation in March 2023. This will be the first musical produced by the Imperial Theater. The plan is to stick closely to the original story, and Toho Stage is already looking forward to sharing its vision of a Spy X Family musical with the public.

Toho Stage commented, “The original work of Spy X Family is the action comedy manga published by Tatsuya Endo in Shonen Jump. Its unique build with a spy, an assassin, and an esper becoming a passing family while keeping each other’s secrets, cute and stylish characters, a worldview that’s an exquisite blend of seriousness and comedy, and clever storytelling found alike After that, overwhelming support from its readers started serialization. Spy X Family achieved highest reader and comment record on Shonen Jump.”

Toho Stage is looking for the next live-action actress, Anya Forger

Toho Stage has also announced that castings for Anya Forger, the Esper kid, have opened. Those interested in playing the role are asked to upload a video of themselves singing to YouTube. It remains unclear if this audition is exclusive to people living in Japan, but I’m sure if you’re the right age, can fly to Japan and speak Japanese, you could play Anya Forger!

Spy X Family isn’t the only anime series that’s about to be adapted into a stage production. Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company, in collaboration with Studio Ghibli, is planning an upcoming stage adaptation of My Neighbor Totoro in October 2022.

And in case you missed it, a new stage adaptation of the anime/manga series Fruits Basket The Stage became available for streaming outside of Japan in May 2022. It ran from March 4, 2022 to March 13, 2022 at Tokyo’s Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall.

Spies, assassins and espers, oh my god!

The story of Spy X Family begins with a spy who is given a difficult mission to keep the peace between the rival nations of Westalis and Ostania by spying on Donovon Desmond – the leader of an extremist political party in Ostania. However, Desmond is a notorious recluse and the only way for the Westalis agent, codenamed “Twilight”, to get close to him is to enroll a child in the same private school as Desmond’s son and pose as the child’s father.

Twilight creates the alias “Loid Forger”, adopts a young orphan girl named Anya (who happens to be an Esper and has the ability to read people’s minds) and marries a woman named Yor Briar (she happens to be an assassin), to create a “happy family” that is accepted in the eyes of society. Luckily for Loid, Anya loves all things spying and excitement, so her help comes in handy. Yor and Loid are unaware of each other’s true identities, except for Anya, who can read their minds.

The decision for this musical adaptation is partly due to the fact that the manga series currently has a total circulation of 17 million copies! The Spy X Family anime adaptation began airing in April 2022 and had global success.
