Why the Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO movie release date is August 2022 in the US

Until the last update, Toei Animation, Sony Entertainment, Crunchyroll or other companies related to the production of the anime have not officially confirmed the exact release date of Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO USA. However, the film DBS: Super Hero has been confirmed to hit US theaters in August 2022.

Once the news is officially confirmed, this article will be updated with the relevant information.

November-December and May-July are typically considered the best times for a tentpole film to stand a chance of a blockbuster premiere, while January and February are considered the “garbage months” for bad films. Therefore, it was always unlikely that the release date of the film DBS: Super Hero would be in early 2022.

Another factor is that the coronavirus pandemic is affected by seasonal weather changes. With cinemas tending to be open during the hotter summer months, it’s the best destination for blockbuster films.

The international release with an English Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO dub is planned to maximize its chances in US theaters and other countries like UK, Canada and others. The anime production committee and the company buying the international rights will want to avoid competing with a major American film that will overshadow the 2022 Dragon Ball Super movie.

For example, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train USA’s release date was April 2021. Setting it slightly ahead of May’s blockbusters was probably the smartest move, though the timing was largely enforced by COVID-19 restrictions and the reopening of American theaters.

On the other hand, unlike Demon Slayer, the release date of Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO US is still within a month of the Japanese theatrical premiere. The Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie premiered in Japan in mid-December 2018, while FUNimation’s US release date was mid-January 2019.

Despite being considered dump month, Broly set box office records for an anime film. Based on this story, it appears that the Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO movie release date in the US is being timed to optimally compete against the competition rather than waiting until November 2022, hence its release in August 2022, although that timeframe is outside of the optimal lies goal.

Keep in mind that August 2022 movie premiere probably wasn’t the original plan as the movie DBS: SUPER HERO was delayed in Japan. The original plan was probably June 2022 which would have been better as the kids are on summer break.

Dragon Ball Super Moro story arc awaiting Dragon Ball Super Season 2?

Fans had long speculated if the new 2022 Dragon Ball Super movie would adapt the Moro story arc from the Galactic Patrol Prisoner saga in the Dragon Ball Super manga. After all, it is the next manga story arc after the universe tournament of power arcs that was in Dragon Ball Super Season 1.

The new superhero movie is definitely going in a different direction, and Toriyama also confirmed that the Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO 2022 movie will have an original story… and an “unexpected character”! Which was probably a reference to the Red Ribbon Army androids.

Another character design showed Pan being noticeably older compared to the Tournament of Power arc. In the current Dragon Ball timeline, Dragon Ball Legends, DBS: Broly, and then the post-Tournament of Power Moro arc take place in this chronological order.

So based on Pan’s age relative to the timeline, it seems like the movie DBS: Super Hero has a big time jump so it takes place sometime after the Moro arc.

Dragon Ball Super Moro’s story arc is much more likely to be adapted from a new Dragon Ball Super season 2 anime TV series. To put things in perspective, the Tournament arc of power was 16 manga chapters and equaled 55 anime episodes, while the Moro arc was 26 chapters.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for the DBS manga which may be related to Dragon Ball Super Season 2.

Dragon Ball Moro
In the Dragon Ball Super Moro manga story, Goku and Vegeta join the Galactic Patrol to hunt down an ancient wizard named Moro. After 10 million years of imprisonment, Moro broke out of the galactic prison. Moro’s abilities allow him to steal the powers of others, and his plans for the Dragon Balls on Namek pose a threat to Earth and the entire universe. Photo credit: Akira Toriyama

As such, the Moro arc is just too long to fit into the limited running time of a DBS film. At the same time, the manga version of the Tournament of Arc of Power came out after the anime, so it’s difficult to make such comparisons because the anime detailed everything, while the manga broke new ground.

The Dragon Ball Super manga is currently in the Granolah the Survivor arc. The story arc is very interesting as a bounty hunter tries to steal the dragon orbs to get revenge on Frieza for destroying his people.

Let’s just hope that the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero 2022 movie leads to an announcement of Dragon Ball Super Season 2. Stay tuned!
