(WFXR) – Friday 5 August marks the start of the Commonwealth’s tax free weekend and with the start of school people are taking advantage of offers where they can.
This weekend each year, Roanoke Public Schools hosts their annual “Load the Bus” event, where buyers can use their tax-free savings to donate school supplies to those who can’t afford them. Allowed to. Roanoke City Public Schools Superintendent Verletta White says her mission is to make sure no student returns to school unprepared.

White said, “It’s the most wonderful time of year, it’s back to school and it’s time for us to ensure that all of our students have everything they need to have a successful start to the school year that should be taken.”
As inflation continues to push up commodity prices, Roanoke County School Superintendent Ken Nisley says many families are feeling the financial strain of back-to-school.
“Everyone really feels inflation, there are so many high prizes that anyone can give up, whether it’s just a box of crayons or a couple of markers or a couple of glue sticks. It goes really far.” Nicky said.
The Load the Bus event began at 3:00 p.m. and included cheerleading performances from two local schools, music from music students, and of course, a school bus ready to be loaded with supplies. Community members say they love what they do.
