The Downton Abbey Character Fans Are Relieved Changed Over Time

This character is none other than the formidable and inimitable Beryl/Mrs. Patmore (Lesley Nicol), the chef at Downton Abbey. From the opening scenes of the series, we know that Mrs. Patmore doesn’t like to put up with fools. Her staunch, brusque treatment of her assistant Daisy (Sophie McShera) gives audiences their first glimpse into the dynamics of the abbey’s enormous staff and how seriously they take their jobs. However, as a thread on the r/DowntonAbbey subreddit suggests, many were relieved to realize that despite her harsh introduction, Mrs. Patmore would ultimately prove to be just as loving, lovable, and likeable a character as any.

Referring specifically to the chef’s relationship with her charge, u/lydiagracemay7447 wrote: “[It’s] as well as [Patmore] softened than [the] The series went on until it became more like a mother-daughter relationship.” Other fans agreed. The same thing! I’m really glad they gave up that attitude. I am in love [Patmore] later.”

Others pointed out that Mrs. Patmore had her reasons. Some alluded to the training she herself would have gone through to become a chef. At the same time, many others in the thread recalled that she believes she will lose her sight in Season 1, and the fear of losing her livelihood manifests itself in her lashing out at the younger, more physically fit Daisy. Thankfully, as McShera and Nicol revealed in an interview, the bond between the two servants only grows stronger as the seasons progress.
