Fans of “The Office” named episode 23 (“Goodbye Michael Part 2”), in which Michael moves to Colorado to be with Holly Flax (Amy Ryan), as the show’s most tearful. Michael secretly decides to leave a day early and has to rush to have one last special moment with each employee. Jim’s the only one who gets it. Both choke when Jim calls Michael “the best boss I’ve ever had.”
When Michael drives to the airport, Pam is off running errands and seeing a movie while Jim frantically texts her to come back. At the airport, just as Michael is walking to his gate, Pam runs barefoot to give him a tight hug. She then tearfully says to the camera, “He said he was just really excited to come home and see Holly.”
On Reddit, u/The Gnomie wrote, “I start crying every time I watch this episode.” Another user shared, “Pam rushing to the airport tops it all off for me.” u/doodzrool gave to: “I’m crying. like a whale. I’m crying so much.” u/solom112 called it “the most real thing I’ve felt in all my time watching TV”.
Some users even called this episode the unofficial conclusion of the series. u/brokowska420 commented, “That really was the end of the show for me right there.” Later seasons of The Office, in which Andy Bernard (Ed Helms) and Robert California (James Spader) take the lead, are the least popular with many fans. Although Michael’s antics often get on the team’s nerves, Dunder Mifflin loses something special when Michael leaves.
