This Is Where Some Came Running Was Actually Filmed

Since the film is set in Indiana, James Jones’ home state, much of Some Came Running was filmed in the state. Set in the fictional town of Parkman, Indiana, the majority of the production was filmed in Madison and Terre Haute, Indiana (via Turner Classic Movies). Some of the notable locations were Hanover College, where Martha Hyer’s Gwen French teaches college classes, and the Ohio River in Milton, Kentucky. Filmed in the gorgeous CinemaScope, director Vincente Minnelli made the most of the location and filmed as little as possible on the MGM soundstage in Los Angeles, Calif. (via IndyStar). The lush cinematography brings to life every little detail of the small town, almost making it feel like a character in the film itself.

Contrary to the city’s friendly appearance on screen, many of the cast reportedly disliked their experience of filming in Madison. Originally reported by TIME Magazine, there was great excitement when citizens discovered a film starring such A-listers would be made in their area. Many of the days spent filming saw crowds surrounding the crew to get a glimpse of the filming. Frank Sinatra is reported to have made harsh comments to viewers while filming the bus scene, and Arthur Kennedy and Shirley Maclaine discovered that their phone calls were being tapped by hotel employees (via IndyStar).
