The first season of anime Tomodachi Game was animated by Japanese animation studio Okuruto Noboru. Founded in 2017, the company is relatively new, so Tomodachi Game is their second big project where they are the lead studio.
Studio Okuruto Noboru is best known for collaborating with Tezuka Productions on How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord Season 2. They have also released the anime TV series Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter and the OVA episode Planetarian: Snow Globe.
The anime project was directed by director Hirofumi Ogura (Cells At Work! Season 2, director of the JoJo anime episode). Writer Kenta Ihara (Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2, Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy Season 2, Vinland Saga Season 2, Full Dive, Cautious Hero, Trapped in a Dating Sim, Mieruko-chan) handled the scripts and composition of the series .
Artist Satomi Miyazaki (episode animation director for Attack On Titan, Vinland Saga, Gintama, Higurashi) was the character designer. Composer Michiru (Dance Dance Danseur, Virgin Road: The Executioner and Her Way of Life, Ascendance of a Bookworm Season 3) wrote the music.
The theme song music of Tomodachi Game Season 2 OP (Opening) and ED (Ending) has not yet been announced.
In the first season, the Tomodachi Game OP “Double Shuffle” was performed by Nana Mizuki. The ED “Tomoshibi” was performed by Saji.
The season one finale, Tomodachi Game Episode 12, was released on June 22, 2022.
This article contains everything that is known about Tomodachi Game Season 2 and all related news. As such, this article will be updated with news, rumors, and analysis over time. In the meantime, let’s get into what’s known for sure.
Tomodachi Game 2 release date predictions
Until the last update, Studio Okuruto Noboru, Kodansha, the producer Studio Mausu or other companies related to the production of the anime have not officially confirmed the release date of Tomodachi Game Season 2. The production of a sequel to Tomodachi Game has also not been announced.
Once the news is officially confirmed, this article will be updated with the relevant information.
In the meantime, it’s possible to speculate as to when or if the Tomodachi Game Season 2 premiere date will happen in the future.
Tomodachi game reviews were good, but not great. And reviewers seem to either love or hate the TV show.
Enjoying the twist on the traditional high-stakes game formula, some believe this to be the hidden gem of the Spring 2022 anime season. Others dismiss the entire premise as unrealistic, noting its similarity to Squid Games as the players are all heavily in debt.
Of course, some put their money where their mouths are. In this case, the anime wasn’t popular enough to boost Tomodachi Game’s manga sales Oricon Top 20 Manga Charts for April 2022. In contrast, SPY x FAMILY dominated sales (no surprise), while Komi Can’t Communicate and Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie received a noticeable boost.
The anime also didn’t typically rise to the top of Crunchyroll’s popular anime list.
Based on this data, it is difficult to predict whether the anime production committee will allow Tomodachi Game Season 2 to be extended, but it is definitely not guaranteed.
In addition, Studio Okuruto Noboru has no history in producing anime sequels. Even if a Tomodachi Game sequel gets the green light for production, it’s still possible that producers will switch studios. But if they wait for the availability of the main staff and the studio, it will be years before the Tomodachi Game Season 2 release date.
Release date of Tomodachi Game Season 2 English Dub
The first season of the anime TV series was initially streamed with English subtitles only on Crunchyroll and Netflix Japan (not Netflix USA, Hulu, FUNimation, HIDIVE, VRV or Amazon Prime Video). The release date of Crunchyroll’s Tomodachi Game English Dub was April 19, 2022.

The release date of Crunchyroll’s Tomodachi Game Season 2 English Dub is believed to be announced in the timeframe of the Season 2 premiere.
Tomodachi Game Manga vs Anime Season 1
The anime’s story is based on the manga series Tomodachi Game by concept creator Mikoto Yamaguchi and writer/illustrator Yuki Sato. It has been published in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine since December 2013 and has been included in Tomodachi Game Volume 20 since April 8, 2022.
In Japan, the manga’s story has already been adapted into a four-episode TV drama and a two-part live-action Tomodachi Game film, culminating in 2017’s Tomodachi Game Gekijou-ban Final.
Unfortunately, no North American publisher has announced an official English translation of the manga series. However, there are fan-made Scanlation projects that will mostly be caught up with the Japanese release.
Fun fact: Yuuichi is written as 友 in Japanese. The characters translate literally as camaraderie or may imply that friendship comes first.
The Tomodachi Game anime managed to capture most of the tension and spooky vibes of the mind games in this psychological thriller. Manabu’s manic movements were fun, especially since the voice actress changed her voice to match the different costumes.
Still, it was the relative strength of the manga story that pushed the anime forward. The animation itself wasn’t very remarkable and since the anime didn’t adequately portray the exaggerated facial expressions, the anime changed the tone of certain character interactions.
Regardless, the timing of certain scenes and the overall pacing got the job done. It never felt like the anime was rushing through the source material like so many anime do.
The chapters are typically around 40 to 50 pages long, and the first five episodes have an average of less than two adapted chapters each. At halftime, Tomogachi Game Episode 6 began adapting manga chapter 10 and was named after chapter 11 based on the big reveal of the “killer” Yuuichi.
(Of course, what really stood out in Episode 6 was the “supermanly kiss” between Yuuichi x Tenji!)
All in all, the ending of the first season finale, Tomodachi Game Episode 12, is predicted to match the manga Volume 6: Chapter 25… but it’s also possible that it could be Volume 8: Chapter 35.
Ending in chapter 35 means ending with the characters entering the adult Tomodachi game and that moment is definitely the best stopping point even if it’s a cliffhanger ending. The problem is that the second half of Season 1 would have to race through Game 3, (fake) Game 3.5 and Game 4, adapting 26 chapters in just 7 episodes.
As such, Chapter 25 is probably the best stopping point Season 1 could hit without completely sacrificing the story’s pacing. It also allows for the first season to end on a high note with Yuuichi’s victory and rescue by the Admins. The anime may just end with the admins teasing that the game isn’t quite over yet.
On the other hand, the chapter 25 ending doesn’t offer much plot resolution, as many storylines are still hanging and Shibe’s trial begins in chapter 26. So, in a way, it’s an even worse cliffhanger ending than Chapter 35. Actually, the anime production committee should have scheduled two courses for the first season.
The good news is that there is plenty of source material for creating Tomodachi Game Season 2. The bad news is that only English fans who want to read before the anime have to rely on fan translation projects that are a bit rough to partially understand.
Tomodachi Game Season 2 Anime TV Spoilers (Summary/Plot Summary)
Note: These spoilers were originally released prior to the release of Tomodachi Game Episode 12 and will be updated with additional details over time. Meanwhile, here is the story summary for manga volume 7.
With Yuuichi injured and taking time to recover after being treated at a hospital, Tenji Mikasa and Yutori Kokorogi must carry Yuuichi’s banner to the next stage without his help. The duo must work together to face Game 4: the so-called Friend Sin Trial.
Yutori and Tenji can decline this game and skip straight to game 5, but if they do, their friend Makoto Shibe will be left with no defense in this mock trial by Judge Manabu. Shibe broke the rules of the Tomodachi game by telling his father about the game. So if Tenji and Yutori leave Shibe, he will “disappear”.
Bound and gagged, Shibe is accused of murdering his own father. And the admins have already “collected the evidence”: fingerprints on the gun, father’s blood on Shibe’s clothes, and several witnesses who can bring Shibe close to the time and place of the crime. The argument with his father was so bad that Shibe even declared, “I’ll kill you.”
The goal of Game 4 is to “prove Shibe’s innocence” by convincing the selected “jury members” by collecting their “not guilty” vote. In this case, the jury members are her 28 other classmates, and her not-guilty vote is determined by Tenji and Yutori, who convince her to give up 1.96 million yen, equal to 70,000 yen each.
Yes, that means convincing every classmate to give up their field trip fee, which was stolen when this twisted story began. The school reimbursed the classmates for their stolen money.
Tenji and Yutori only have one week to collect all the money directly from their classmates. You cannot collect the money in any other way. Sounds easier, right? This game is about saving a friend instead of attacking a friendship.
But the core essence of Game 4 has a different twist: “Is Shibe Makoto worthy enough to give everything to save?” It turns out that the accused Shibe isn’t just suspected of “killing his father”… him is accused of attacking Shiho Sawaragi in his bed and he may even be linked to Shiho’s “disappearance”.
And this is just warming up because when Yuuichi comes back they will take the fight to the admins by facing the adult Tomodachi game.
Unfortunately, anime fans will have to wait until the Tomodachi Game Season 2 release date to see what happens next. Stay tuned!
