While speaking with Variety about how “Andor” pushed the boundaries of what a “Star Wars” story could be, showrunner Tony Gilroy said he didn’t see many of the Easter eggs and references we see on the show can really appreciate. Instead, he said that you should thank the art department for those deep cuts in “Star Wars.”
“I am aware of the canonical incidents affecting my people. When it comes to ships, or props, or weapons, or sometimes planets, if we don’t invent them, I’m deeply involved,” Gilroy explained. “But then the art department will sneak all that crap into Luthen’s gallery – I had no idea. Like ‘Oh my god, that thing in the background!’ and people blow it up. This is the art department. So many cool people work on the show. There’s a deep geekdom in Pinewood, believe me.
It’s certainly very interesting to learn that Tony Gilroy isn’t really responsible for all the incredible callbacks and easter eggs we’ve seen in Andor (including the aforementioned gallery of Stellan Skarsgard’s Luthen Rael that references Star Wars: The Force Unleashed”) and a great reminder of just how cooperative the entertainment industry really is. While Gilroy himself may not understand these deep cuts, it’s clear that die-hard “Star Wars” fans in the art department have plenty of goodies in “Andor” left scattered.
