LAS VEGAS, July 5, 2022 /PRNewsWire/ — Touro University of Nevada, home to Nevada’s largest medical school, announces a Las Vegas Crisis Response Medical Training Program with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). The program provides comprehensive medical training and courses for subway officers to save lives during crime emergencies in Las Vegas.

Made possible by a $1 million grant from the Engelstadt Foundation, the program provides unique simulated reality medical training for officers, helping them prevent life-threatening bleeding associated with accidents, contusions and gunshot wounds. , and other incidents where law enforcement is on the scene first. The Medical Training Program provides local first responders with Personal First Aid Kits (IFAKs), comprehensive medical kits needed to perform life-saving operations on site.
“This collaboration allows our officers to hone their skills in delivering critical care in any situation,” said LVMPD Deputy Sheriff Christopher Darcy. “The training and associated personal first aid kit has transformed the way our officers respond to situations where medical care is required. Officers practice using first aid kits on simulated mannequins. are designed to provide a hyper-real experience designed to create excitement. This means that in a real scenario, officers would be better prepared to administer first aid to seriously injured people while medical personnel are not on site.”

Over 1,200 subway officers have already completed the training program, and 700 more officers are expected to complete the training by September.

The first phase of the program includes training for all metro commands with around 3,000 officers. The training program will be conducted at the new Joint Emergency Training Institute (JETI), a high-tech, real-world law enforcement training center in East Las Vegas.
JETI is the permanent home of the LVMPD’s Multi-Assault, Counter Terrorism Action Capabilities Team (MACTAC). Through this program, Touro aims to educate all existing and prospective law enforcement personnel in the Valley and beyond. The university is seeking additional private funding to expand its medical education program.
