While Covid-19 has been on the rise again in the form of the second wave in several countries like India and Brazil, the United States of America has so far been in a good position in terms of recovery and active cases of Covid-19. The seven-day average number of deaths has been at its lowest on Thursday since October 2020 as per a CNN analysis of the data acquired by the Johns Hopkins University. As per the reports, there have been just 684 deaths as of Wednesday which is quite a big drop as compared to the numbers in 2020vand since January 2021, the seven-day average of the deaths has been seen to go down. One of the biggest reasons of this reduction in deaths has reportedly been the vaccinations as per experts and rightfully so as the vaccine has proved to be efficient and the death toll has been reducing since the start of the vaccine drives as well.
Is The US Prepared To Recover From The Coronavirus?
Wherever the vaccine drive has been prominent and more people have been vaccinated, the death toll has plummeted as the risk of catching the coronavirus reduces significantly when most people in a locality are immune, which is quite logical. Yet, there are people and myths against the vaccine which has the potential to act as a blockade against the full recovery of USA post the pandemic. This blockade can also pave the way for a second wave and apart from a recovery, several states can be seen to be struggling for hospital beds again as well, although the medical system has never been stronger and experts feel that the system is well prepared to handle a second wave of the Coronavirus, but still, one can never be too sure in such cases.
Experts believe that to defeat the virus, more Americans need to get vaccinated, mostly the youth as it has been also seen from reports that the most reluctant ones or the ones against the vaccine are the youths themselves. A recent Quinnipiac University poll found that around 36% of adults under the age of 35 don’t plan on getting a vaccine. If the youth remains reluctant due to either fear of the myths related to the vaccine or just due to sheer overconfidence of being immune, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns of a rise in Covid-19 cases that would be difficult to control, seeing that most of the population of the country is the youth. The new Covid strain, the B.1.1.7 variant is more contagious and has hit the youth pretty hard in several states and that has been the reason for spikes in cases in some states, so the youth needs to get vaccinated as quickly as possible, moreover, young people need to consider the long terms risks of Covid. People are being advised to avoid travel plans to countries abroad as well.
It is estimated that to suppress the spread of the virus around 75-85% of the country’s population needs to be vaccinated. At the moment, roughly 43% of the country’s population has received their first dose and around 28% are fully vaccinated. The more people get vaccinated, the fewer chances for the virus to transmit. The officials are trying to push more and more vaccinations to the market, but there has been a decrease in its demand, which is a worrying sign as people need to remember that the fight against Covid isn’t over. The virus needs to be eradicated and not just supressed, as it has the potential to crash entire medical systems which can be seen in the case of countries that have been severely affected by the second wave of Covid.
