Is the Vinland manga ending soon? Series creator Makoto Yukimura has long told fans what to expect from his manga series and it is inevitable that Thorfinn’s story will come to an end as it is loosely based on actual history.
The mangaka has confirmed that the manga was in its final arc with chapter 167. He estimates that the final chapter of Vinland Saga will be Vinland Saga 216, which means the finale in Volume 28 will come out in 2024 (barring an unexpected interruption).

Vinland Saga Season 2 release date is fast approaching and already talked about as a full adaptation, which means that the anime TV series will contain Vinland Saga Season 3 and 4.

The story of Vinland Saga is tied to the story of Thorfinn Karlsefni
In a May 2022 Twitter Spaces discussion, Yukimura commented that the final chapters of 2022 have shown a lot of joy as the upcoming chapters will feature a raw reality based on the true story.
Warning: The following paragraph contains major spoilers.
In the September 2021 Monthly Afternoon Issue, an important announcement regarding the series was made on July 26, 2021, the day of the release date of Chapter 184 of the Vinland Saga. The story of Vinland Saga 184 contained the first contact between Thorfinn and the Native Americans.
The ending of Vinland saga manga is based on the real Icelandic Vinland sagas “Saga of Eirik the Red” and “Saga of the Greenlanders” which were texts from the early 13th century. They gave various accounts of Norse voyages to Vinland, which literally means wine country, due to the vines found in North America.
The characters of the Vinland saga are based on historical accounts from the period. It is historical fiction, however, as the author took many creative liberties to fill in the gaps in the historical record.
The main protagonist, Thorfinn, is based on real-life explorer Thorfinn Karlsefni, whose nickname means ‘the makings of a man’. Leif is of course based on the historical Leif Erikson, an explorer credited in modern times with discovering the North American continent on which Vinland is located.
Other characters are based on legend or are fictional, with Askeladd’s name being based on a Norwegian folklore character who was known for his cleverness.
The historical accounts actually differed on key details, including who named geographic features and when Eirik the Red died. The saga of Eirik the Red particularly strengthens Thorfinn and downplays the role of Norse explorer Thorvald Eiriksson. It even denies that Thorvald ever traveled to Vinland, citing the location of Thorvald’s shipwreck to an anonymous ship.
Most of the manga story arcs leading up to Journey to the West in 1010 have been about fleshing out Thorfinn as a person. As such, the manga series serves as a fictional prologue to the true story.
Vinland Saga Volume 28 will end the manga’s story by 2024?
Writer-illustrator Makoto Yukimura’s Vinland manga series began publication as a weekly shonen manga in 2005, but eventually switched to a monthly sein format by the end of the year.
Makoto has sometimes spoken about how he maintains a “homey style” compared to other manga creators.
“You just have to stay healthy and be careful not to die,” he said tweeted in terms of how long it took for the ending of the Attack On Titan manga to come out.
In the May 2022 Twitter Spaces discussion, Yukimura admitted that he switched from weekly to monthly publication as he is a “very slow writer.” He typically publishes about 11 chapters a year.
As of March 2022, the series was up to Vinland Saga Chapter 192: Thousand Year Journey Part 1. As of July 21, 2021, the tankobon books were up to Vinland Saga Volume 25.
Many years ago, the creator claimed he was targeting volume 25 for the ending of the manga Vinland Saga. Manga creators are notoriously bad at estimating the length of their stories, and Makoto seems to be no exception.
What we do know for sure is this Makoto specified that he plans to create four major storylines: War, Slave, Eastern Expedition, and the final Vinland strand. The final arc began with Volume 24: Chapter 167.
While that sounds like the Vinland Saga manga ending is just around the corner, it seems more likely that the final chapter will be released years in the future. After all, Makoto promised in November 2019 that the final arc would be over 1,000 pages long and around 50 chapters.
“The Vinland Saga is roughly divided into four parts. So far I have drawn three parts, the War Edition, the Slave Edition and the Eastern Expedition Edition. I’ll start drawing the last one,” Makoto tweeted. “I will draw over 1000 pages and over 50 chapters. It will probably take several years. If serialization is not discontinued.”
(The last sentence’s disclaimer is concerning, but it seems unlikely.)
The latest chapters are between 19 and 25 pages long. Assuming Makoto doesn’t plan to dramatically cut what is arguably the most important part of the story, it should easily be over 50 chapters.
Therefore, Vinland Saga Chapter 184 is less than half of Makoto’s original plans for the final arc. The manga will be released monthly, so unless there are any interruptions or delays, Makoto could reach the end of the Vinland Saga manga between May 2024 and July 2024 at the earliest.
Since each manga volume has either 8 or 9 chapters, the last volume could be volume 28 or 29. The book would likely be out in late 2024 or early 2025.
Let’s just hope the ending of the Vinland Saga manga is as epic as the rest of the manga series. Stay tuned!
