The current schedule calls for Wicked to be split into two films, premiering in 2024 and 2025. This strategy offers viewers more time with the characters as well as a more faithful adaptation of the source material. Director Jon M. Chu broke the news to fans via social media. In his statement, Chu spoke about the reasons for the extended schedule. The filmmaker revealed that pre-production showed just how massive a project Wicked would be. He went on to say that a single film would detract from this grand narrative. “With more space, we can tell the story of ‘Wicked’ the way it was meant to be told, while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters,” he says tweeted.
Release dates are always subject to change, as this project has proven time and time again. When the film dropped out of alleged directors and producers, the release dates were pushed back as well. At least two have been announced since 2010, with production appearing to be in the early stages (via Vulture).
