Berlin. According to a study, the YouTube video platform has also developed into a relevant economic factor in Germany. According to a study by the British economic consulting firm Oxford Economics, published in Berlin on Wednesday, the YouTube ecosystem contributed more than 1.2 billion euros to German GDP in 2021.
YouTube is also leaving visible traces on the job market: According to the study, YouTube’s creative ecosystem supports more than 30,000 jobs (full-time positions) in Germany. Results from a survey of Germany-based YouTube stakeholders were used to estimate YouTube’s overall financial impact. In addition, published sales figures from the music industry were taken into account. YouTube itself has been shut down.
YouTube on more and more big screens
According to its own statements, YouTube has over two billion logged-in users every month. After that, people watch over a billion hours of video every day. In Germany, the daily live viewer times more than tripled between January 2020 and December 2021, said YouTube Germany boss Andreas Breeze.
Adults in Germany watch YouTube for an average of 40 minutes a day. People are increasingly consuming not on smartphones or computers, but on the big screen in the living room. In December 2021, more than 30 million people in Germany watched YouTube on their televisions.
The high reach is also reflected in the number of customers. “In Germany there are more than 100,000 subscribers to more than 5,000 channels,” said Breeze. This is an increase of more than 20 percent compared to the previous year. More than 400 stations in Germany also have over a million subscribers, an increase of over 15 percent compared to the previous year.
